Visiting Alhambra Gardens In Spain (Local Guide)

The Alhambra Palace is a remarkable attraction in Spain.

When we decided to put on our Spanish shoes, we began our exploration of this beautiful place. It’s a renowned attraction for numerous reasons and one of the hidden elements that you will want to explore would be the Alhambra Gardens or Generalife.

We had a lovely time finding a car in Spain to get to the Alhambra Palace and then we began to explore the gardens.

It almost felt like we were Christopher Columbus walking around. While this area is not like Ibiza, it has a charm of its own.

You are going to see people from all walks of life here as they enjoy what the garden has to offer.

We will break down what we got to see when we went to the Alhambra Gardens in the area.

Things To See At The Alhambra Gardens

The Generalife

Known as the Generalife, it’s important to understand the history of Islam in the region.

The Ottomans are the reason for this location being built and their influences continue to be seen in Spain. This is why the Generalife has been designed and it is important to assess the intricate nature of this garden.

The garden is tranquil and it’s beautiful to look at as soon as you are in this part.

The first thing you are going to notice will be the architecture around it. Everything has been designed from hundreds of years ago and they have done a great job of making sure it’s well-maintained.

As you observe the staircase, you are going to adore the attention to detail. It’s luxurious.

You are also going to get to see the Magnolia plants on the side along with the fountains that have been set up. It’s quite the sight!

You will also get to see ample plants throughout the various levels and that is what adds to the magic. It’s almost like you are in a different world.

Aromatic Plants

Most people will look at the visual elements of the Alhambra Gardens and believe that is what makes this an iconic attraction in this part of Spain.

Yes, it is lovely to be able to see Cypress trees, but it is also key to think about your other senses including your smell.

The smell of jasmine that sprinkles throughout the garden is incredible. It’s intoxicating. You are going to fall in love with the scent as it mingles with the air around you.

We didn’t want to leave the areas where this scent was more noticeable.

Of course, this is not all that you are going to get to smell when you are walking around the Alhambra Gardens. For example, they have roses in the gardens, which makes it even more appealing to walk around when you are there.

The smell of roses in the air will linger and it’s beautiful. The type of rose that’s grown here is called the Damascus rose and it’s incredible to smell. You are going to love it.

Vegetable Garden

Imagine having an area to grow plants and then not considering the tangible value of growing food in the same area.

This is why you are going to see vegetables being grown at this location too.

This has been taking place for generations and it’s a part of the appeal for those who are walking around the Alhambra Gardens for the first time. You are going to get to see the vegetable patch that has been set up in various parts of the garden.

This is going to include beans and artichokes.

Spain has long been associated with these plants, so it makes sense they are grown in the garden too. Of course, there is a lot more on offer too including onions that were being grown on one side. It was fascinating to see as we walked around.

You tend to see a lot of plants being grown and they are edible.

Medicinal Plants

Most people will come to the Alhambra and begin to look at the visually appealing elements. This is natural and it’s something we have done too.

However, when you begin to dig deeper, you are going to realize there is a lot more on offer for those who are here. You are going to get to see the charm of the medicinal plants that are being grown throughout the garden.

This includes thyme and rosemary, which are known for their medicinal properties.

The reason this has grown in stature has to do with the way this garden was set up during its initial years. The premise was to make sure all of the important plants were grown and it was not just for show. This is why the Alhambra Gardens are known for their medicinal plants too.

Ornamental Plants

We will begin with the eye-catching plants in the Alhambra Gardens because that’s what you are going to be on the lookout for.

We were stunned by the natural beauty here.

This is one of the more iconic spots because of the types of flowers that have been planted in the region. It was the colors and overall beauty that took our breath away. We were stunned.

What types of plants are grown in the garden?

We noticed Cypress trees and Magnolia trees along various parts of the area. This added to the natural elegance of the space and elevated its beauty. We loved walking through the garden because of this reason.

It is not just the types of plants in the Alhambra Gardens but also how well-maintained they are. You can tell a lot of detail has gone into making sure things are perfect and that stands out in our eyes.
