Venice is one of the most popular tourist cities on the planet.
It’s commonly seen as a romantic place with its gorgeous canals and bridges. The region is a sight to behold and a remarkable place for someone who has never been to this part of Italy.
We went to Italy in the summer and it was a fascinating experience.
The one thing a lot of potential visitors ask us is about the safety in Venice during the night. Is this a safe city to stay in as a tourist?
This is a valid question and one we are going to dig into here.
Safety Of Venice In Italy
Let’s begin with the general safety in Venice.
It is a safety city and we found it to be far safer than some of the other major regions in Italy. This includes cities such as Rome or Milan.
For the most part, tourists don’t have to worry about much when you are in Venice. The region is tourist-friendly as that’s one of their main sources of income. The city is designed around this aspect, so you are going to feel good when you are walking around.
Whether you are going to an Italian grocery store or a local boutique, you are going to feel safe. The only thing a person might worry about will be the crowds at major areas around Venice. This is often the case during the holiday season.
As for the crime rate in Venice, it is quite low.
It is rare for major crimes to take place and the crimes that do occur tend to involve theft. This means being careful about your valuables and keeping most of them where you are staying rather than walking outside with them.
Even then, Venice is a safe city in Italy. You are not going to have much to fret about.
Best Time To Go To Venice
If you are planning a trip to Venice, the first thing we would do is consider your timing.
Venice is visited throughout the year but we wouldn’t come here when it gets cold. The weather is going to be a bit too frigid for you to be able to make the most of the bridges and canals. Instead, we would come during the spring or summer.
Tourists often recommend the spring because it’s pleasant and the rush is less. We agree with them even though we went in the summer.
Night Safety In Venice
Let’s assume you want to step outside during the middle of the night in Venice.
We spoke to locals in Italy about this.
For the most part, there is no major concern when you are in Venice during the night. Feel free to walk around even if you are traveling alone. You will not be dealing with major safety concerns as there are always people around.
Some streets become empty but you are still going to be relatively safe.
You might even discover a new side of Venice when the sun goes down!
We would recommend not going to areas such as the Santa Croce neighborhood because more pickpocketing tends to occur there. This is something we have heard from the locals in Venice and also some have mentioned Castello.
These are still safe but not as much as the other parts of Venice.
How To Stay Safe In Venice
We often mention the importance of having a plan when it comes to safety as a tourist. This includes safety as a tourist in Venice.
Before anything else, you should know the local emergency number. It is 118 in Venice. You are going to want to call this number similar to how you would call 911 in other countries. For other emergencies, call 0039 041 5294060.
Write down these numbers so you don’t have to think about it later.
Next, you are going to want to make sure your essentials are kept in the hotel room. You don’t want to be carrying them around to tourist attractions as that is when things can go wrong and a pickpocketer will come at you.
We would also recommend avoiding tourist areas in the middle of the day during summer. This is simply because it gets too hot and you are going to feel uncomfortable. It’s better to go earlier in the morning or later in the evening.
It’s also smart to make sure you are paying attention to your food choices. Don’t aimlessly choose a specific restaurant. Read the reviews and make sure it’s running well. This is going to ensure you don’t fall ill because of food poisoning.
It’s common for people to want to buy from anyone in a tourist city. We would avoid some of the street vendors that sell items because they are not going to be real nor are you going to get a good deal. It’s better to keep your money to yourself in situations such as these.
A person who is going in the summer will want to make sure to wear sunscreen. This will keep you safe and is going to make sure you don’t have to worry about getting a sunburn.
Venice is a safe place to visit for tourists.
After all, this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Italy. It’s common for people to walk around at all hours of the day and that’s what makes it a riveting locale.
We loved our stay in Venice and do recommend it to everyone.
