When we were eating at an Anna Maria Island restaurant in Florida, we decided it was time to do a bit of tent camping in the state.
We had heard this was something a person should be doing due to the campgrounds in this part of America.
Of course, we had to go to the right area.
This is why we decided to go for tent camping in the Florida Keys. There is ample natural beauty there, lots of things to do, and just the right ambiance for those who want to have fun.
We did our research and found numerous good spots in the area.
Here are the top places for tent camping in the Florida Keys.
Best Spots For Tent Camping In Florida Keys
Dry Tortugas National Park
The Dry Tortugas National Park is a legitimate winner in our eyes.
It’s a breathtaking national park that has beautiful greenery, lots of space, and the vibe you are going for in a situation such as this.
We are quite particular about enjoying the outdoors and being able to get an authentic experience and that’s what happened when we went here.
The one thing we will have to point out is that it does not have amenities. This means you are on your own like you would be in the past. This is not one of those fine-tuned campgrounds where everything is within reach!
You will have to keep this in mind when you are preparing for time at the park.
Of course, this also means you are going to get a more authentic experience and it’s going to be fascinating to see the wildlife all around you.
Curry Hammock is one of the more intriguing campgrounds because it offers immediate access to the beach.
We loved being able to go to the beach and just settle in for a bit. Sometimes, you are not going to want to explore too much and it’s more important to walk around to experience the beauty of a place. If that’s what you want, you are going to love Curry Hammock.
It’s quaint, beautiful, and just works.
Big Pine Key Resort
The Big Pine Key Resort is a dream for those who are going to be bringing their RV to a place where it’s a straightforward setup and clean.
We liked this area because it was maintained and it was great for our fishing needs.
We adore the idea of going to the nearby water and just reeling in a few fish during our time at the location. If that is something you are going to resonate with then you are in luck! Big Pine Key Resort had everything we needed.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
This is noted for being one of the more popular campgrounds in Florida and it is a must for those who are looking to do a bit of tent camping.
When we were speaking to the locals, they would often mention this as the go-to spot for outdoor activities.
We might not go that far!
It is a nice place when it comes to the beaches, which are eyecatching and offer ample space. We feel the actual campsite can be better as it is not as refined but it does get the job done. On the whole, this is still a nice place and being able to swim in the water is always pleasant.
We also enjoyed going to the marina and enjoying the boats.
Boyd’s Key West Campground
Boyd’s has long been regarded as a simplistic campground where you are going to set up the tent and just enjoy it in a traditional sense.
This means you are not going to get too many amentieies and it’s a simple layout.
This is ideal for those who are just coming for the tent camping and that’s all you want. Anything else is going to have to be found outside the campground, so be prepared to bring it on your own. However, the views are breathtaking here.
Bahia Honda State Park
The Bahia Honda State Park is gorgeous and it is one of the top spots for those who do get the chance to find a spot here.
We did find it difficult to get things set up but it is still a delightful spot because of how new it is. This is essential for anyone wanting to find a clean campground that is going to be designed the right way and efficient.
There were enough spots for us to find what we were looking for.
This included the amenities such as electricity, tables, and water. For most people, this is going to be enough to get the job done as it was for us.
We also liked being able to go to the beach for a bit to sit on the warm sand.
Key Largo Kampground
Since we are talking about tent camping here, it’s essential to maintain this viewpoint when it comes to assessing the beautiful key Largo Kampground.
This particular campground is interesting.
It’s great for RV camping and there are numerous spots where those RVs are set up. With tents, you are going to have a more traditional set up, so be prepared to bring things with you. Although, we did like the view and the overall ambiance of the campground.
Sugarloaf Key Campground
This is a fascinating campground with lots of things to do, ample space, and a clean setup. We liked being able to roam around taking in the greenery when we were here.
When we are looking for a good campground, we want something that’s efficient and well-maintained, which you are going to get here.
The one plus point for this is that it’s a newer campground. So, you are going to appreciate the amenities and how things have been spruced up on-site. This is ideal for newer tent campers because you will find enough space to relax.
Calusa Campground is a decent option because of its gorgeous marina. It might be the best marina in the business when it comes to campgrounds.
The sight is gorgeous and just in line with what a boater might want.
However, it is not always ideal for those who need ample space. It’s a tight space, so you are going to have to be mentally prepared for this going to the Calusa campground.
These are the top spots for tent camping in the Florida Keys.
For the most part, this is a great part of Florida for camping. You are going to have a good time as soon as you settle in.
